Hurricane Katrina, 2005 - We adoped Gautier Presbyterian Church of Gautier, Mississippi. This 45 member church suffered 4 feet of flood damage. Even though many of her members homes were also flooded because of a 25 foot tidal surge that hit this area's beaches and bayous, this small church was a tremendous witness to their community. PCPC members took names of all the Gautier members and prayed and corresponded with them for over a year.
Gautier Presbyterian partnered with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) to have tents set up on their property that housed an average of 80-120 volunteers a week for over 18 months. Once some quick repair work was done on their facility, the tents were taken away and they opened their fellowship hall, sancturary and 5 Sunday School rooms for additional housing and food preparation. Not only was there a tremendous amount of work done in this community by volunteers from all over the US, who stayed at this church, but wonderful relationships were developed among the volunteers and the church members.
PCPC had the privilege to stay at this church with five different week-long mission teams during the 18 months of recovery. Through Gautier Pres. we repaired fences, roofs, walls, painted, distributed donations and offered pastoral care for those having difficuty coping with this disaster. We also adopted an 80 year old woman and worked with her family to repair and furnish her home. PCPC members donated $10,000 for this family. We not only helped rebuild her home, but also furnished her kitchen appliances, bed and bath linens for 3 bedrooms and 2 baths.
One of the members of Gautier Presbyterian Church shared that she felt "That Katrina Blew The Holy Spirt Into Gautier Prebyterian Church."
